Our E minor concert flute is a very versatile contemporary scale, it’s a relative G major, which of course works well with guitars and strings. The E minor finger spread has a challenging reach at 6-1/2″ if you have small hands. It’s a comfortable reach for normal size hands.

I really love the rich mellow voice that I can best describe as big and round.

Our concert flutes feature a precision nest under the bird. The nest enhances the performance by giving you a really alive, present voice that can handle big breath extremes. It’s really hard to overblow these flutes, even with a heavy vibrato. These are the famous flutes that you hear on many of today’s native American style flute albums.

Our concert flutes are built using a superior one piece construction method. This gives you a more solid flute without any delamination concerns which some two-piece flutes face. Drilling is also very accurate in as much as I can bore down the center of the flute +/- .002″, or ½ the thickness of a $1 bill. Drilling also makes for a prettier flute without the glue lines.

Our flutes have a 6 hole, extended range tuning. This is sometimes called a Mode 1-Mode 4 tuning. They have a total of 15 notes, covering an octave plus a minor third. They also cover a 12 tone chromatic octave within the 15 note scale. This is the standard tuning used by most flute makers. A finger chart is included with your new flute, showing exactly how to achieve each of the 15 notes.

Our flutes have a hand-rubbed finish that includes four hand sandings, four coats of finish (inside and out) and a final steel wool rub. This process takes over four weeks. You’ll feel and see the difference our finishing effort makes.

I just purchased an Em flute from you, and I have to admit that, because of the price, I was a bit skeptical on what the feel, the tone quality and the pitch accuracy of the flute would be like. I’ve played a few well-crafted flutes (which shall remain nameless) that cost quite a bit more than yours. But, within minutes my first effortless tones, I knew this flute would be a treasured part of my collection and an obvious "go-to" whenever I needed a warm rich sound of an NAF to fill the air.

A sincerest of thanks for the obvious energy and craftsmanship you put into these flutes.

Right now, this is my favorite flute. I wasn’t looking to spend a lot of money on a highly ornate instrument. I wanted an E minor flute that sounded superb, and I found it in Butch’s Concert. I have small hands, so it was a bit of a challenge to reach that lowest note at first. But I soon adapted. It looks beautiful, has an elegant simplicity, and a gorgeous low, deep tone. I keep this flute on a table by my living room window, and whenever I pass it, I have to pick it up and play it. It’s the flute on which I’m really learning breath control and vibrato. A few times, neighbors strolling by in the evening have stopped to listen. I’m amazed at how light these flutes are, and still project so well. The E minor goes beautifully accompanied by my guitar as well.

‘Many thumbs up’ on this warm-sounding Flute! Just a few days after I (quickly) received my E minor, I performed on it in a church with wonderful, vaulted ceiling acoustics, and folks absolutely loved the sound! I just composed a long piece for THIS E Minor Concert Flute with Piano, and can’t wait to perform it next month! Great, consistent craftmanship, Butch! ~Jacki St. Louis, MO

I just wanted to thank you, Rachel and Butch again. I love my Em flute! It plays amazing. I have other flutes in a few different keys and usually the block needs to be readjusted or sometimes it takes a minute to warm up. But this flute is consistent, reliable and is always ready to play, and the sound is healing, meditative and beautiful. I could not be happier. I carry it with me everywhere.

I bought this Butch Hall E minor flute in cedar about two years ago. I was experimenting with flutes from various makers, all bought sight-unseen by mail.I put this one aside for a while when I was enamored (I thought!) with other flutes. After a few monthes, I tried it again and VOILA! my favorite flute – perfect in every way. Most of the flutes I "don’t like" are too loud. Butch’s is perfect for all occasions and environments – perfect tuning and tone, capable of loud or soft play. I can only thank Butch, Laura & Rachel best by buying more of these magnificent flutes ! ! ! Thank you, thank you !

I don’t have large hands – maybe medium at best or small to medium – but I can play this flute (E Minor Concert). It is amazing to me that I can’t over blow this flute on the low notes! It allows for a strong breath and increased volume on the lower notes, it that’s what you’d like to play sometimes. It’s such a clean, handsome looking instrument. I’m so impressed with this flute’s sound and playability that I am going to add the G, F# and A to my collection. I think the D and C might be too large for my hands, but might try the D at a later date. My biggest surprise is the affordable prices of such concert quality flutes!

I received my E Minor in cedar today and it’s absolutely stunning! I am new to Native American flutes and have zero musical background so purchased based only on sound clips. This flute is absolutely gorgeous and the sound quality is steps WAY above other flute makers that I ordered from recently. Out of the 3 others I ordered from other makers, I only kept one…I sent one back for a refund and gave the other to my nephew for Christmas. The one that I kept cost me $280 and although I love the deep, sultry tone it has, the attention to detail is not even close to Butch Hall’s precision workmanship. I wish I had found Butch Hall flutes first. They are exceptional and I will only order from Butch Hall from now on. For the price, these flutes cannot be beat. The prices are low but the quality is extreme high end. By the way…thank you so much for including a hand written Christmas card with my order. It was a special added touch.

I have long enjoyed the awesome quality of these flutes even back to days on a Ranch in Az next door to Rodger Dry Lake off Woody Mountain Rd with awesome wildlife of Elk & Deer, Birds & Much more. My first flute was the first choice Learners type flute that got me going Sending sounds out to the Elk herds in great Numbers that they and the dear & most other wildlife enjoyed and came nearer as I played. Latter down the road I moved to S. Dakota and found The Artist behind the flute I had and found he had grown in producing many wide ranges of Quality flutes and I starting buying and testing more. My favorite was the E minor Concert, even so with the reach that took more to do so as I had a smaller hand and a disabled hand/shoulder combined and through consistently training three numb fingers to reach the lower three holes it finally came true for me.
I’d love to see a Courting flute some day made by Butch.

Got my Butch Hall E minor in the mail this morning. Absolutely wonderful instrument. Will be buying more of the Hall family flutes in the near future. The craftsmanship is superb and has great beauty in it’s simplicity. The tone and intonation are excellent. You can’t go wrong buying these flutes.

Absolutely marvelous flute, I’m extremely satisfied to have another Butch Hall flute to my collection. Anytime anyone asks me about mine, I always recommend these first hand. Such exquisite craftsmanship and spirit is put into it, makes it so much more than just a flute. Thank you so much, Words are powerless to express my gratitude!! I look forward to many more years to come of the playing it here in the Appalachian mountains.

Just wanted to let you know we got the flutes. I am NOT returning them!!! I have another flute that I thought played well, but these are as smooth and easy as pouring melted butter. The mouthpiece is different than what I was used to but, from the very first blow, the sound is clean, pure and perfect. My 13-year-old daughter has fallen in love with the Little Bird. I tried to record us playing a duet to send to you, but she kept giggling too much. Still, the music is lovely. The Em is heart-rending. I don’t think I’ll need to go lower. Thank you!

This is a beautiful instrument. The turned mouthpiece, the brass insert in the nest, the gorgeous wood grain, all impressive. Of course all of this is secondary to the primary consideration of sound quality. I researched extensively before this purchase and chose this flute more based on the number of recording artists that made it their flute of choice than anything else. Boy, were they right. This is a world class instrument. The tonal quality is haunting in its beauty. I have played it in several environments and was more than pleased with the results. I then took it into my project studio, added some subtle reverb with some minimal percussion and OMG! Butch, thank you so much for providing such an incredible instrument.

Don’t know why I waited so long to purchase a Butch Hall flute. I have others with multiple coats of polyurethane but when I took the Em flute out of the packaging I could actually get the wood texture feel on my fingers. I am finally of the opinion that if you are going to play an authentic instrument it should feel something like that instrument. The tone is amazing and takes little breath to get a great sounding note.
I can already see I’ll be replacing some of the flutes I have now.

Love my Butch Hall E Minor Concert Flute! Such an amazing voice and beautifully made. While this is the first Butch Hall flute I’ve bought I am certain that it will not be the last. Quickly shipped, nicely packaged and protected. Pleasure doing business with such great people.

This is my second Butch Hall flute, and the first concert style. Wow! So responsive. It opens up all the interesting ornaments and nature sounds that brought me into this fluting tradition. I look forward to years of exploring what is possible. And I love the very elegant look and feel of the wood, the beautiful grain, the subtle mouthpiece construction, the colors in the plate. A winner, at a very affordable price. Thank you for your dedication to your craft.

I follow up on my previous comment written a little over a year ago.
I just received a new cedar E minor flute and everything is perfect, like all Butch Hall flutes !
Here is a list of what I like:
    – original and interesting idea, the flute has a precision nest under the bird which makes the sound very pure and protects the mouthpiece of the flute
    – the sound is very clean, very clear and powerful ; the stamp is very little windy; even with very little blowing, the notes are always perfectly in tune
    – the flute is easy to handle and does not have too large a diameter, which makes playing and handling easier and more pleasant
    – the wood is beautiful
    – the flutes have a clean and pure aesthetic
    – Butch Hall is a passionate craftsman who gives real soul to the flute
    – we find the true characteristic sound of native American flutes

Laura perfects everything with her kindness.

Now I understand why many professional artists use Butch Hall flutes !

Thank you for your work !

    🙂

    Very powerful flute! Gorgeous!

  19. Vincent (me again lol) (verified owner)

I have already written two comments on this flute, then I will calm down a bit otherwise my overflowing enthusiasm would flood the site lol!

After a few months of use, I have only had positive feedback. People also notice the beauty of the wood (red cedar) a lot, especially since the flute was made with a first choice piece.

This is an opportunity for me to thank Laura once again for having selected me a flute with “shimmering” colors!

You can’t imagine how much your flutes put me in a good mood. 🙂
